What Does it Look Like to Sponsor a Child?

"There is a kind of virtue that lies not in extraordinary actions, not in saving the orphan, but in steadfastly working for a world where orphans are no more."

We wanted to take time today to share more about our sponsorship program with you, our supporters. Maybe you are a long-time sponsor but aren’t sure how your financial support helps the child you sponsor. Perhaps you have been considering sponsorship but don’t really know what it means to be a sponsor. Our sponsorship program is a critical part of the sustainability of The Raining Season.

Because of sponsors from across the country, our children at the center are able to receive the best possible care, including meeting their needs based on safety, education, medical and mental health, spiritual and nutrition. Not only are their basic needs provided, but because of our outstanding group of dedicated sponsors, we are able to go above and beyond to care for our children.

Our sponsorship commitment is to provide a unique sponsorship program like no other that is primarily based on a personal relationship. With your commitment to monthly support, you will have the opportunity to build a lifelong relationship with a child in great need and experience the joy that comes from truly changing the life of another.

Since the Raining Season’s sponsorship program is based on building personal relationships there are several unique opportunities to build those relationships. You will receive communication from your sponsored child including letters and school updates. In return, you can send letters and photos to your child through Karen Pyle, our sponsorship coordinator. You will also have the opportunity to Skype monthly with the child you sponsor. This will allow you to connect even further, ask them about school, their goals and to share more about yourself and your family.

Finally, and for some the most exciting part, you can travel on a team to Sierra Leone to spend time with the child you sponsor and love on them. Sponsoring a child at The Raining Season is another way to show these kids just how much they are loved and cared for. The staff does an extraordinary job caring for each and every child, but with nearly one hundred children, the opportunity to see that others love and care for them and can give them personal attention is huge.

The cost to sponsor a child is $45 a month. Every child in our care is assigned multiple sponsors, which enables us to provide excellent care in the most difficult of conditions. Aside from the chance to receive updates, Skype and travel, you might wonder what $45 covers? $45 provides nourishment. Our children receive 3 meals per day plus snacks and daily vitamins. $45 also provides medical care. Our children have access to the highest quality medical care in Sierra Leone. Additionally, our children receive a quality education and continue to score higher than most on all national testing.

Your monthly sponsorship commitment provides clothing and other personal items. This includes school uniforms, play clothes, Sunday best, and shoes, as well as all of the other necessities. Sponsorship dollars cover the staff and provide safety for our kids. Our children find love, protection, and a family atmosphere, with the support of 60+ staff focused solely on their care. Finally, sponsorship dollars are used to support the spiritual growth of each child at the center. Many are introduced to Jesus for the first time when they enter through the gates of our center. Pastor Daniel, along with the entire staff evangelize and disciple the children, sharing the gospel with them.

Sponsorship is not new to The Raining Season. However, we continue to use it to promote a relationship between a sponsor and child that builds and generates bonds of trust. Our vision is to create accountability and encourage children to put hope into each day. We want the kids to have something to look forward to and give them someone to count on. Additionally, we want to give them something consistent and we hope to give the children sponsors that they can celebrate their achievements with.

Are you interested in becoming a sponsor? You can directly email Karen Pyle, our sponsorship coordinator, at sponsorship@therainingseason.org.

Thank you for your continued support! We are so grateful for the sacrifices our sponsors make to love and support our kids at the center. Join us in continuing to pray for our kids that they may know they are loved and see Jesus through their sponsors.

Many blessings,

The Raining Season
